Closing “Season 1”
시즌 1을 마무리하며
이 계속 변화하는 프로젝트의 첫 번째 시즌이 곧 마무리될 예정입니다… 가능하다면 6월쯤을 생각하고 있어요. 사이트에 있는 스토어 페이지는 그대로 유지할 예정인데요, 솔직히 그거 만드는 데 너무 고생해서 이 요소는 버릴 수가 없어요. 다만 “리미티드” 섹션은 삭제되고, 거기에 있던 작품들은 더 이상 판매하지 않을 거예요. 그래서 최종적으로 세 명만 제가 만든 세 가지 이미지에 대한 독점 권리를 갖게 됩니다. 예상보다 훨씬 좋은 결과예요.
Have A Seat ARG… Stand Up ARG의 온라인 사촌
지역 기반 ARG 프로젝트도 (비록 아직 머릿속에서만이지만) 꾸준히 구상 중이었어요. 하지만 아이가 생기면서 그 진행 속도는 많이 느려질 거예요. 지금은 직접 장소를 탐색하는 것도 어렵고요. 그래서 시즌 2에는 꽤 어려운 퍼즐을 만들어 웹사이트에 올릴 생각입니다. 안타깝게도 발품을 많이 팔지 않아도 되게 설계할 예정이라, 제 입장에선 조금 덜 재미있을 것 같지만요. 그래도 시즌 2 프로젝트는 제가 세운 ‘20개의 프로젝트’ 중 하나로 포함시킬 거예요. 요즘 그 프로젝트에 대해 자주 생각하고 있습니다. (물론 실질적인 진도는 느리지만요.)
“20개의 프로젝트” 프로젝트
나머지 프로젝트들은 다음과 같은 아이디어들이 있어요. 여유 있을 때 하나씩 진행해보려고요.
1. 지붕에서 그림 그리기 (덮개 안 사면 진짜 지붕 위에서 할 듯)
캔버스가 10개쯤 있고요, 그중 하나는 거의 완성됐고 또 하나는 잠시 멈춘 상태예요. 이 작업들은 제 예술 프로젝트 중 가장 비슷한 부류가 될 것 같아요. 최근에 지붕으로 나갈 수 있게 됐는데, 몇 개 들고 올라가서 실컷 그려보려 해요. 작년에는 디지털 작업만 엄청 했었는데, 이제는 다시 손에 물감 묻히는 게 기대돼요.
2. 면도기 손잡이 2.0
새 면도기 손잡이를 만들고 있어요. (전문 용어로는 “스케일”이라고 불러요.) 과정을 기록하고 있는데, 지난번보다 조금 더 까다로운 작업이었고, 현재 모양새는 꽤 만족스러워요. 짬날 때마다 조금씩 작업 중이에요.
3. 쓰레기 더미에서 찾은 보물: 재생 재봉틀
재봉틀 하나 주웠어요! 누군가 오래된 브라더 재봉틀을 쓰레기장에 버렸더라고요. 저는 종종 쓰레기장에서 물건을 구해와서 프로젝트에 쓰곤 해요. (한 번 쓰레기 줍기 시작하면, 계속 하게 돼요.) 집에 가져와보니 작동되더라고요! 다만 벨트가 삭아서 끊어졌길래 새 걸로 교체했어요. 이제 분해해서 청소하고, 다시 조립해서 도색까지 할 계획이에요. 그러고 나면 기능적으로 옷도 수선할 수 있도록 재봉도 다시 배워보려고요.
4. 앞마당 반란
정원 관련 프로젝트도 하나 포함하려고 해요. 앞마당을 천천히 정원으로 바꾸고 있거든요. 원래는 그냥 잔디밭이었는데, 지금은 나무, 꽃, 허브, 덤불 등을 심고 있어요. 아무것도 없는 공간을 ‘안 별로인’ 걸로 채우는 중이에요. 정원은 시간이 걸리는 작업이죠. 하지만 이웃들이 지나가다 칭찬해줄 때마다 뿌듯해요. 가능하다면 그 공간에 그네를 포함한 작은 구조물을 세우고 싶어요. 원래 있던 그네는 썩어서 무너졌거든요. 아직 구체적인 계획은 없지만, 뭔가 만들어볼 생각입니다.
5. “푸디”란 말은 싫지만, 음식 좋아하는 사람들을 위한 웹사이트
지역 음식 리뷰만 다루는 별도의 웹사이트도 만들 생각이에요. 표선 근처에 좋은 식당이 생각보다 많더라고요. 그래서 이쪽에 관심 있는 사람들을 위해 글을 써보면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었어요. 지금 웹사이트는 복잡하게 만드는 게 목적이었다면, 다음은 좀 더 간단한, 카탈로그나 정보 모음집 형태가 될 거예요. 음식 찬양 욕구도 해소되고, 부담도 덜할 것 같아요.
6. 용접의 꿈: 스모커 그릴 만들기
몇 년 전부터 스모커 그릴을 직접 만들 수 있는 조건이 있었어요. 용접기, 낡은 가스통, 앵글 그라인더까지 다 있고요. 오래된 소화기를 절단해서 작은 훈연기처럼 써본 적도 있는데 잘 작동했어요. 용접은 아직 못 배웠지만, 오래전부터 배우고 싶었던 기술이라 이번에 도전해보려고 해요.
7. 불을 밝혀라: 램프 만들기
램프도 하나 만들고 있는 중인데 아직 형태를 정하지 못했어요. 조명 회로는 완성했고, “병렬 회로 연결”이라는 것도 새로 배웠어요. 언젠가는 이 기술이 또 쓰일 것 같아요. 이제 이걸 어떻게 진짜 램프로 만들지 결정해야 해요.
8. 뼈 작업과 도깨비 꿈
사슴 해골을 다섯 개 정도랑, 다양한 뼈들을 모아두었어요. 인레이 작업이 어려운 것들로 뭔가 만들고 싶은데, 꽃이 들어갈 것 같다는 막연한 생각만 있어요. 또 멋진 소나무 혹진을 하나 발견했는데, 그걸 도깨비 얼굴로 조각하고 싶어요. (요즘 도깨비 테마로 작업을 많이 하고 있거든요.) 어릴 때 보이스카웃 이후로 조각을 안 했는데, 이제 어른이 돼서 제대로 된 조각 도구도 있으니 더 잘하지 않을까요? 해봐야 알겠죠.

알루미늄이나 금을 녹여 주조할 수 있는 작은 대장간을 만들고 싶어요. 집에서도 만들 수 있는 대장간은 생각보다 간단하더라고요. 제가 평소엔 좀 덤벙대지만, 위험하다고 생각되는 도구를 다룰 땐 신중해져요. (특히 용광로나 회전 칼날 같은 건요.) 이건 Super Meat Boy 덕분이라고 생각해요.
10. 그 이상을 원하는 테이블
마지막으로, 아주 두꺼운 소나무 테이블이 하나 있는데 뭔가 해보고 싶어요. 아직 아이디어는 없지만요. 너무 기대하진 마세요. 검은 잉크로 염색하고 그림도 조금 그려봤는데, 좀 더 재미있게 만들고 싶어요. 도깨비 얼굴을 그려 넣는 것도 고려 중이에요.
자, 그럼 이제?
벌써 다섯 달이 지났는데, 아직 세 개 정도밖에 못 했어요. 심지어 뭘 하고 싶은지도 확실하지 않아요. 지금 상황에서 목표를 다 달성할 수 있을지도 모르겠어요.
하지만, 도전은 계속됩니다.
Wrapping Up Season One
So the first season of this shifting project is going to come to a close soon… I’m thinking June if I can. I’m going to keep some sort of store page on the website because making the store suuucked, and I’m not going to scrap that element. But the “limited” section will be removed, and that art will no longer be for sale. That means that only three people will get the exclusive rights to three of the images I made. This is actually better than I predicted.
Have A Seat ARG… Stand Up ARG’s Online Cousin.
I’ve been working on the ARG for my local area (if only in my head), and that project is going to slow significantly with a child. I’m not as able to scout physical areas for that at the moment. So what I plan to do is make a fairly difficult puzzle for Season 2 and post it. It won’t require as much “footwork,” unfortunately, and that makes it less fun for me—but I’m going to count Season 2 of the website as one of my 20 projects. Which I’ve been thinking a lot about if not actively completing.
The “20 Projects” Project
As for the rest, I have a loose idea of some of the things I can work on and include in my “20 Projects” project that I’m attempting.
1. Painting the Roof (Probably Literally If I Don’t Get A Drop Cloth)
I have around ten stretched canvases to paint. I’ve almost finished one painting, and I’ve been stalled on another for the moment. I think this will be the most homogeneous chunk of my art projects. I’ve just gained access to my roof, so the ability to take a few canvases outside and go nuts on them together is in the cards. I drew so much digital art last year that it’ll be nice to get my hands dirty again.
2. Razor Handle 2.0
I’ve been working on a new razor handle (they’re called “scales,” if you’re interested in jargon). I’ve been documenting it to share. It was a little more intensive than the last razor, and I’m happy with how it’s shaping up. I hope to be finished with it soon, but I’ve only been able to work on it in very short intervals.
3. Dumpster Gold: The Sewing Machine Resurrection
I FOUND A SEWING MACHINE! Someone dumped a vintage Brother sewing machine at the trash house. I often salvage things from the trash house for projects (or just to use. What can I say? Once a dumpster diver, always a dumpster diver). Anyway, I took it home, and it worked! It just needed a new belt because the old one had dry-rotted and snapped. I got a new belt. Now I’m going to disassemble the machine, clean it up, and paint it—then reassemble it. After that, I need to relearn how to use one for possible future projects, or just the utility of being able to repair my clothes.
4. Front Yard Rebellion
I’m going to make one project involving my garden. I’ve been slowly turning my front yard into a garden. It was just a square of yard—and that’s great if you like grass—but I’m planting trees, flowers, herbs, and bushes in it. I’m trying to fill up all that space with something that doesn’t suck. And gardens take time. You just do a little here and a little there until it becomes really impressive. My neighbors often comment on how they like it. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to do.
I don’t know how feasible it is, but I want to construct a small structure containing a swing so that we can enjoy sitting outside again. The swing that came with the house gradually rotted and collapsed. In any case, I’m not sure what the actual project will be, but I’m going to do SOMETHING out there.
5. A Website for People Who like Food (I don’t say “Foodies” because I think that shit is stupid.)
I’m going to create a separate website for local food reviews. From what I can tell, there are a disproportionate amount of good eateries down here near Pyoseon. And oftentimes I think about making a write-up for people who may be interested in good food. So where this website has been me seeing how complicated I could make a website from scratch, the next one will be more simple. Maybe more like a catalog or reference material for people who like food. It should be much more manageable and scratch the itch I have to praise good food.
6. Welding Dreams: The Smoker Grill Build
I’ve had the ability to manufacture a smoker grill for a few years now. I have a welding machine, an old gas tank, and an angle grinder. I found some old fire extinguishers that I split and cleaned up, and I’ve used them as a cold smoking chamber with a smaller grill that I already have—so I know it works. I have to learn to weld. That’s okay; I’ve wanted to learn how to weld for quite some time anyway. So I may give this a shot.
7. Light It Up: The Lamp Dilemma
I’ve had a lamp that has been in the works for a while, and I’ve not decided how I’m going to implement it. I’ve got the lighting mechanism working, and I learned how to “run a circuit in parallel,” which I can see being helpful later. Now I just need to figure out how to turn what I have into a lamp.
8. Bonework and Dokkaebi Dreams
I have collected five deer skulls and a whole mess of bones. I want to make something out of the ones that are less conducive to inlay. I have no idea what, but I’m thinking it’ll involve flowers. I also found this wicked pine knot that I want to carve into a Dokkaebi face (I’ve been doing a lot of Dokkaebi-themed art). I haven’t whittled since I was a scout, so doing detail work as an adult with a set of wood carving tools I found should be a lot more intuitive—but we’ll see.
9. The Forge (and the Fire in My Brain)
I really want to build a small forge to cast aluminum and maybe gold. The process of making a functional home forge seems simple enough. And though I am incredibly oafish, when dealing with things I consider life-threatening, I’m significantly more cautious (Especially true of blast furnaces and rotating blades) I credit a lot of that to Super Meat Boy.
10. The Table That Wants to Be More
Finally, I have a thick pine table I want to do something with. Maybe an idea will come to me later. But don’t get excited about it yet. I used ink to dye the wood black and started drawing on it, but I want it to be more fun. Maybe I’ll do some Dokkaebi faces on it too.
So… What Now?
So we’re currently five months in, and I’m barely three projects down—and I’m not even sure what I want to do exactly. I have no idea if, under current circumstances, I’ll be able to meet the goal I’ve set.

10. The Table That Wants to Be More
Finally, I have a thick pine table I want to do something with. Maybe an idea will come to me later. But don’t get excited about it yet. I used ink to dye the wood black and started drawing on it, but I want it to be more fun. Maybe I’ll do some Dokkaebi faces on it too.
So… What Now?
So we’re currently five months in, and I’m barely three projects down—and I’m not even sure what I want to do exactly. I have no idea if, under current circumstances, I’ll be able to meet the goal I’ve set.
But here’s to trying.
