Ah, the first post where I can actually use this as a blog. Nice.<\/p>

Every evening before bed, I spend time drawing. Usually, this results in me fighting to stay awake, one eye half-open, before I eventually wake up in my computer chair mid-morning. I always carve out some time to keep my stylus moving and my creativity flowing. But I don\u2019t just draw; I make things in general. As artists, creativity doesn\u2019t usually stick to just one medium, even if we have a main focus.<\/p>

Lately, my focus has been on subtly introducing the interactive features of my website to encourage community engagement without being too obvious. Without giving too much away, it’s an area I’m just starting to explore, and there’s definitely a learning curve. I\u2019m testing it out with the foreign community on Facebook and a few people who\u2019ve found my Instagram from Jeju. I know these are far from ideal test groups, but it\u2019s simple and lets me start gauging whether people will actually engage. So far, it\u2019s gone about how I expected. Being strange or out of the ordinary isn\u2019t enough to spark curiosity anymore\u2014I\u2019ll probably need to be more direct. Facebook\u2019s image compression system sped up that realization. It forced me to add this extra note (for anyone reading this who hasn\u2019t seen the original post):<\/p>

It\u2019s more obvious than I\u2019d like, but I think the way I set it up\u2014requiring people to click \u201cread more\u201d\u2014keeps it hidden enough to only reward those truly paying attention. Still, I\u2019m doubtful anyone will engage beyond \u201cWhat does this mean?\u201d<\/p>

About 8 or 9 years ago, posts like this would have gotten more attention on Jeju Island Social. People knew me back then, would be curious about what I was up to, and would probably ask. Plus, online interaction was a lot higher. It\u2019s strange that social isolation hit even the online space. You\u2019d think it would have gone the other way. Personally, I interacted online a lot more\u2014mostly on message boards, searching for some intellectual stimulation. It was a bit disheartening, but I did get a solid understanding of various viewpoints and ideologies from the people I interacted with. I think that\u2019s why I want to blend my art with something more sociological. I have a feeling I can spark more community activity. I don\u2019t know why, but I just feel it. And there\u2019s no reason not to try a different style of art.<\/p>

I started shaving with a straight razor about a decade ago and never stopped.<\/p>

[If you\u2019re a man, I highly recommend it. I used to hate shaving, but now I either don\u2019t mind it or enjoy it, depending on how much effort I put in.]<\/p>

As an advocate of this practice, I encouraged my friend Sharif Seyam (who has a great YouTube channel, FULL BELLY TRAVELS<\/a>) to give it a shot. His dad got him a razor in Egypt. It was old, and the handle was a mess, but it was steel and functional. Sharif decided to go with a luxury safety razor instead, so he gave me the straight razor. It sat around for years.<\/p>

Here’s where it gets interesting:<\/p>

I live in the countryside and often walk backroads. Sometimes, I come across deer carcasses. One day, I marked the spot of a deer, planning to come back for the skull after nature had done its thing. I now have four skulls (one is still fresh and bleaching in the sun). But now, I have to hide the carcasses because some weirdo keeps taking my skulls before I can get them! Anyway, I realized that once everything\u2019s gone, deer don\u2019t have that many bones, so I collected the remaining ones. I figured I\u2019d make something like wind chimes. I brought them home, soaked them in a mix of soap, bleach, and sodium percarbonate, and let them dry in the sun.<\/p>

So, back to the razor. I needed new scales (handles) for it, and I had some beautiful deer bones that I thought would be perfect. I cut the bone, shaped it, and made a mold. I then ground the bone to fit the mold and filled the rest with crystal resin mixed with a bit of \u201cmermaid dust\u201d I had in a craft bag. After fitting, pinning, and polishing it up, this is the final product that I\u2019m especially proud of.<\/p>

I wish I had taken \u2018before\u2019 pictures so you could see the transformation, but I hope you appreciate how beautiful it turned out. I call it \u201cStrawberries and Cream.\u201d (SEE BELOW)<\/p>

Don\u2019t worry\u2014I\u2019m working on another one now, though the process is a bit different since it involves wood and bone. I\u2019m taking more photos this time, so I won\u2019t ramble on as much.<\/p>
