🔪 무딘 칼날의 문제

주방에서 무딘 칼만큼 쓸모없고 짜증나는 게 또 있을까요? 면도기 안의 무딘 칼날 정도가 그나마 비슷할 겁니다. 그래서 예쁜 핸들을 달아둔 면도날들을 테스트해보기로 했죠.
결과는?
하나가 형편없이 실패했습니다.

🌀 휘어진 날

면도에 있어 중요한 건 ‘강철’ 그 자체입니다. 베벨(절삭 각도)을 정확히 세울 수 있다면 털은 잘립니다.
하지만 날이 휘어 있다면 베벨 자체가 불가능하죠.
이 칼날은 정말로 휘어 있었습니다. 한쪽은 두껍고, 얇고, 다시 두꺼운 반면, 반대쪽은 그 반대.
눈으로도 확연히 보일 정도였어요.

선택지는 두 가지였습니다:

새 칼날로 교체 (약 30분 정도 갈고 다시 조립)

칼날을 완전히 재형성 (시간이 오래 걸리고 성공 보장 없음)

저는 두 번째를 선택했습니다. 실패하면 시간 낭비일 수도 있지만 도전해 보기로 했습니다.

🎨 단순 수리가 예술 프로젝트로
게다가 실패한 프로젝트는 제 목표 수에 포함되지 않기 때문에 성공 여부도 중요했습니다.
그동안 날을 갈아본 경험은 많지만, 숫돌만으로 칼날을 다시 만들다시피 하는 건 처음이었거든요.

결국, 간단한 수리를 하려던 게 어느새 예술 프로젝트가 되어버렸죠.
기술과 인내, 섬세한 손길이 필요했습니다.

⚙️ 작업 과정

먼저 **칼날의 척추(스파인)**를 양쪽 모두 평평하게 만들어야 했습니다.
그래야 날이 숫돌에 고르게 닿을 수 있으니까요.

그걸 얼마나 오래 했는지 손끝 감각이 사라질 정도였습니다.
한두 시간쯤 지나서야 날 전체가 고르게 닿기 시작했고, 그 순간은 안도감 그 이상이었습니다—정말 짜릿했어요.

하지만 문제가 끝난 건 아니었습니다.
칼날 끝 부분은 너무 약해 쉽게 부서졌습니다. 아마 예전에 너무 많이 갈리거나 잘못 열처리된 탓일 겁니다.
결국 불안정한 부분을 잘라내고, 튼튼한 강철에 도달할 때까지 깎아야 했습니다.
그리고 날이 곧게 유지되도록 신경을 곤두세워야 했죠.

✅ 결과물

그렇게 탄생한 건 특이한 모양이지만 완전히 기능하는 면도날이었습니다.
멋지고 날카로우며, 무엇보다 잘 작동합니다.
도박이었지만, 제대로 성공했죠.

그리고 웃긴 건, 칼날 척추가 두꺼워서 마치 ‘블러드 채널’처럼 보이는 홈까지 생겼다는 겁니다.

스롭(strop)으로 날을 정리하고 면도를 해봤는데, 잘 됩니다.
앞으로 더 자주 쓰면 날은 더 좋아질 겁니다.

이건 당당히 완료된 프로젝트로 셀 수 있습니다.
정말 많은 시간과 정밀함이 들어갔고, 결과에도 만족합니다.

그리고 아기방 리모델링도 있죠.
결과는 너무 좋았지만, 아직도 정리해서 포스팅은 못 했습니다.
정말 자랑스럽게 생각하는 프로젝트 중 하나예요.

🎯 더 큰 목표
지금까지 약 20개 목표 중 12개 프로젝트를 완료했습니다.
그리고 동시에 ARG(대체현실게임) 프로젝트를 위한 스폰서도 모집 중이고,
기본 맵과 퍼즐 리스트도 어느 정도 준비되어 있어요.

이제 남은 건 퍼즐을 엮고, 관련된 아트 작업을 완성하는 일입니다.
이게 전부 잘 마무리된다면, 정말 제 목표를 전부 이룰 수도 있을 것 같아요—그게 현실이 된다면 정말 신기할 겁니다.

The Problem with Dull Blades

There are few things more worthless and irritating than a dull knife in the kitchen—except, perhaps, a dull blade in your shave kit. So I decided it was time to put some of my prettier razor handles to the test.

And one failed. Miserably.

The Crooked Blade

When it comes to shaving, steel is steel. If you can set the bevel correctly, it’ll cut hair. But you can’t set a bevel when your blade has a bad case of scoliosis—which this one absolutely did.  (If you look closely at the edge you can see variations in depth.  On this side it is thick/thin/thick and it’s the opposite on the other side.)

That left me with two choices:

• Replace the blade (which would have meant about half an hour of grinding and re-pinning),

• Or reshape the blade entirely—a time-consuming option with no guaranteed success.

I chose the second. I knew the risk. I also knew how easy it would be to waste a lot of time for nothing.

From Functional Fix to Art Project

On top of the aforementioned, I don’t count failed projects toward my overall goal—and I wasn’t sure if this would work at all. I’ve been sharpening blades for years, but reshaping one with sharpening stones alone? That’s a much bigger challenge.

So, what began as a simple fix quickly became an art project. It demanded patience, finesse, and enough skill to (hopefully) come out with a usable blade.

(Spoiler: it worked.)

The Process

The first step was flattening the spine on both sides. Without that, the blade wouldn’t make even contact with the stone. I did this for so long I actually lost feeling in my fingers. Time disappeared—an hour, maybe two—before I finally saw that the edge was making full contact across its length.

That wasn’t just a relief—it was thrilling.

But the blade had more issues. It was strangely brittle near the end, probably from being overworked or poorly ground at some point in its history. While I was sharpening it, a portion near the tip thinned to a flash and crumbled away. The steel was unstable. I had to grind off a portion of the blade until I reached stronger, reliable metal.

And throughout it all, I had to maintain a straight cutting edge. Otherwise, it wouldn’t function.

The Result

What I ended up with was a uniquely shaped but fully functional razor. It’s sharp, attractive, and—more importantly—it works. It was a gamble, but it paid off.  What’s really nuts is that due to the strange thickness of the spine I ended up with, what looks like, a blood channel.

I stropped it and I shaved with it. It performed fine. And it’ll only improve as I continue to strop it.

This one’s definitely getting counted as a finished project. It demanded real work and precision, and I’m proud of how it turned out.

Other Projects on Deck

I’ve still got the garden project and the compost bin in progress. I’m hoping to have the bin done soon. The big table I mentioned before is also in the works.

And then there’s the baby room renovation—which turned out great, but I still haven’t written up or posted that one. I really should. I’m proud of it.

The Bigger Picture

I’m working as I can, and right now, I think I’m about 12 projects into the 20 I hope to complete. On top of that, I’ve started gathering sponsors for the ARG, and I’ve already got a loose map and a list of puzzles ready to go.

What’s left is stringing it all together and creating some of the artwork. If I can pull this off, I might actually hit my goal—which would be wild.
