Killing Two Projects With LOTS of Stones
문제의 입구 물웅덩이 해결하기
문 앞에 물이 고이기 시작하는 걸 보고, 이번 미술 프로젝트는 밖에서 하기로 했어요. 학생들이 수업 들으러 올 때 장화를 신어야 하는 건 좀 아니라고 생각했거든요. 그래서 물이 다시 고이더라도 올라설 수 있는 길을 만들면 좋겠다 싶어서, 바닥을 살짝 높이는 길을 만들기로 했어요.
길 깔기
길 만드는 데 시간이 제일 오래 걸렸어요. 원래 깔려 있던 보도블럭이 좀 있었는데, 문 앞까지는 안 닿고 너무 촘촘하게 붙어 있었거든요. 도로에서 입구까지 간격 맞춰서 다시 놓으려면, 하나하나 자리를 파고, 모래 깔고, 돌을 평평하게 다듬어야 했어요. 보기 좋고 기울어지지 않게 정리하는 게 은근히 까다롭더라고요.
강아지들은 전혀 도움이 안 됐고요.
한 프로젝트가 두 개로
물론 길을 완성하자마자, 그 옆의 지저분하고 울퉁불퉁한 진입로가 거슬리기 시작했어요. 깨끗한 길 바로 옆에 돌이랑 잡초만 잔뜩 있으면 좀 그렇잖아요. 그래서 결국 프로젝트가 하나 더 생겼죠. 뭐, 20개 프로젝트 중 하나로 셈칠 수 있으니까 오히려 좋아요.
전체적으로 깔끔하게
길이 완성되고 발도 축축해질 일 없게 됐으니, 이제 주변 정리에 들어갔어요. 진입로는 여전히 손볼 데가 많았거든요. 우선 돌로 경계선을 만들고, 화단 벽도 진입로 쪽으로 확장했어요. 그다음엔 잡초들을 뽑거나 약을 뿌려서 정리했고, 새로 만든 돌 라인까지 자갈을 꽉 채워 넣었어요. 지금은 훨씬 정돈된 느낌이에요.
앞으로의 계획
다음으로는 진입로 뒤쪽 끝부분에 돌을 놓고, 그 옆에 덤불을 심어서 뒷마당과 자연스럽게 경계가 되게 만들 생각이에요. 그다음은 퇴비통 업그레이드 차례인데, 지금 쓰는 건 썩어가는 나무 조각으로 만든 거라 상태가 좀 안 좋아요. 시멘트 블럭으로 튼튼하게 다시 만들 계획인데, 제가 블럭 사는 가게에서 재고만 들어오면 바로 시작할 수 있어요.
현재까지의 프로젝트 수
지금 한 열 개 프로젝트를 동시에 돌리고 있고, 그중 여섯 개 정도는 끝낸 것 같아요. 천천히라도 진행 중이니까 전 그걸로도 충분히 만족하고 있어요. 예이~!
Solving the Flooded Entry Problem
I decided to take my next art project outside after noticing water pooling at my door. It didn’t seem fair that my students needed to wear galoshes just to get to class. So, I figured it was time to build a raised walkway. That way, even if water collected again, at least there would be stepping stones to walk on.
The Path Itself
The path took the most time. I already had some pavers, but they didn’t reach the door and were stacked too tightly together. I had to space them evenly from the street to the entrance, dig out each spot, lay down sand, and level each stone one by one. I had to make sure everything looked right and wouldn’t slope awkwardly. The dogs did not help at all.
One Project Becomes Two
Of course, once the path was in, the dirty, uneven driveway next to it started bothering me. It felt wrong to have a clean walkway right beside a mess of rocks and weeds. So, the project expanded. Which is good because I am definitely counting this towards one of my 20 projects.
Making It Cohesive
With the walkway set and no more soggy feet, I turned to the surrounding area. The driveway still needed work. I started by lining the edge of the property with stones to create a boundary and expanding my garden walls to touch the driveway.. Then I tackled the weeds—either pulling them up or spraying them—and filled the whole area with gravel up to the new stone line. It’s much neater now.
Looking Ahead
Next, I’ll rock off the back end of the driveway towards the back and plant some bushes to create a natural barrier between the driveway and the side yard. After that, it’s time to upgrade my compost bin. The current one is made of rotting scrap wood. I plan to replace it with a sturdier version built from cinder blocks—just as soon as the guy I buy them from has them back in stock.
Project Count So Far
I’m keeping up with my projects—currently juggling about ten at once and I’ve finished maybe six. Progress is happening, and that’s a win in my book. Yay!
