이 집으로 이사 온 이후로, 우리는 녹슬고 겨우 기능만 하는 우편함을 써왔어요. 항상 바꾸고 싶었지만, 새 우편함을 찾아보니 전부 비슷한 디자인에다가… 녹이 쉽게 슬 수 있는 것치고는 가격이 너무 비싸더군요. 그래서 아마존에서 미국식 우편함을 하나 찾았는데, 생각보다 비쌌고 아마 중국에서 배송된 것 같아요.
철물점에 가서 4×4 목재를 몇 개 사와서 반홈이음(half-lap) 방식으로 십자 형태로 조립해서 우편함을 고정할 수 있도록 만들었어요. 차에 치이지 않게 눈에 잘 띄도록 빨간색으로 칠했고요. 빨간 기둥을 칠한 뒤에는 래커로 마감하고, 바닥 부분은 방수 테이프와 방수 랩으로 밀봉했습니다. 그 위에 플라스틱 슬리브를 씌워서, 혹시 물이 들어가더라도 배수가 잘 되도록 했어요.
땅에 큰 구멍을 파고, 바닥에 돌을 약 15cm 정도 깔아서 배수가 잘 되게 했습니다. 시멘트 블록으로 지지대를 세우고, 그 주변을 돌과 모래로 채운 다음 벽을 다시 쌓았어요.
이 우편함이 앞으로 수십 년 동안 잘 버텨주면 좋겠어요. 운이 좋다면 다시는 손댈 필요가 없겠죠. 게다가, 보기에도 꽤 괜찮습니다.
Ever since we moved into this house, we’ve had this rusty, barely adequate mailbox that came with it. I’ve always wanted to change it, but when I looked for mailboxes, they all seemed to be similar in design to this one, and also… way too expensive for something that has this potential for rust. So, I found an American-style mailbox (which was more expensive than I expected) on Amazon and had it shipped… probably from China.
I went to the hardware store and bought some 4x4s, and I assembled them in a cross pattern using a half-lap so that I could mount a mailbox to it. I painted it red because I figured I’d make it extremely visible so that people would be less likely to hit it with their car, hopefully. After I lacquered the posts red, I sealed the bottom with a waterproof tape and a waterproof wrap. and then I put a plastic sleeve around it so that the water could, if water happened to get in, still drain out.
I dug a big hole in the ground, filled the bottom six inches with the rocks so that there was adequate drainage beneath it. I braced it with cinder blocks, and I filled in around that with more rocks and sand, and then I rebuilt built the wall around it. Hopefully this mailbox will hold up and maintain itself over decades. If I’m lucky, I’ll never have to mess with it again. Also, it looks pretty good.
